The Karamanlis Chair

The Constantine Karamanlis Chair in Hellenic and European Studies was established in 2001 with the goal of supporting the teaching and research on Greece and its region at the Fletcher School and Tufts University. Founded at the initiative of the Karamanlis Foundation with the support of parents, alumni and friends of Tufts University in both Greece and the United States, the Chair honors the legacy of Constantine Karamanlis, Greece’s preeminent postwar statesman. The holders of the chair include:

 

• Thanos Veremis, professor of modern history at the University of Athens, (2001-2003)
• George Prevelakis, professor of human and regional geography at Sorbonne University, (2003-2005)
• Dimitris Keridis, professor of international politics at Panteion University, (2005-2007)
• Kostas Lavdas, professor of European studies at the University of Crete, (2007-2008)
• Alexandros Yannis senior analyst at the European Commission, (2008-2009)
• George Mavrogordatos, professor of politics at the University of Athens, (2009-2010) and
• Michalis Psalidopoulos, professor of economic history at the University of Athens (from 2010 to the present)

 

Since 2001 the Chair has offered courses to more than 300 graduate and undergraduate students, graduate, including on Greek-Turkish relations, Balkan politics, EU studies, democracy and democratization and economic history.

 

The Chair has organized numerous lectures, se-minars and workshops including an internatio-nal conference on EU-Balkan relations together with Yale University in September 2006, a series of talks by EU statesmen and senior functiona-ries in association with Harvard’s Center for European Studies, and two international workshops on the Greek economic crisis and the future of the Eurozone in October 2011 and in Nove-mber 2012. The Chair provides a vital hub for the study of contemporary Greece and Europe in Boston, one of the leading academic centers of the world today. Through its multifaceted activities and its emphasis on high quality teaching and research, the Constantine Karamanlis Chair makes a vibrant contribution to the community of Tufts University and Greek academia.
